American Airlines Flight Change Policy 2026

Last reviewed against American Airlines' published rules on aa.com.

Reviewed by Jack Martin, Senior Process Associate at AirFiesta. About AirFiesta

Under the American Airlines flight change policy, there is no change fee on most Main Cabin and premium cabin tickets, so you can change an American Airlines flight for just the fare difference in most cases. Basic Economy is the exception: you can change or cancel it free within 24 hours of booking (if you booked at least 7 days before departure), but not after that. Same-day confirmed changes start at $60, and same-day standby is free on eligible US flights.

Quick facts (as of 2 October 2026)

Change fee
None on most tickets from the US in Main Cabin and above. You pay only any fare difference.
Basic Economy
Free to change or cancel within 24 hours if booked 7 or more days before departure. Not changeable after that.
24-hour rule
Full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of buying and booked at least 7 days before departure.
Same-day options
Standby is free on eligible US flights. A confirmed same-day change starts at $60 in the US.
Cancel for credit
A non-refundable ticket cancelled before departure becomes a Trip Credit. 12 months for AAdvantage members, 6 months for non-members.
Deadline
Before your first flight departs. A no-show ticket loses its value.

American Airlines change rules by fare type

The American Airlines flight change policy depends on the fare you bought, not on the route alone. Your fare name appears beside your flights in Your trips. From most restricted to most flexible:

  1. Basic Economy

Free changes and cancellation for the first 24 hours (if booked 7+ days out). After that, no changes, except trips that begin in Europe, which can be changed for a fee. Same-day standby is free on eligible US flights.

  2. Main Cabin

No change fee on most tickets from the US. You pay any fare difference. Cancel before departure for a Trip Credit instead of a refund.

  3. Main Select & Premium Economy

Same no-change-fee rule as Main Cabin. Main Select also gets complimentary same-day confirmed changes on eligible US flights.

  4. Business & First

No change fee, only the fare difference. Complimentary same-day confirmed changes and standby on eligible US flights.

  5. Unrestricted Economy (Y)

Fully refundable and without advance purchase rules. Change with no fee, subject to seat availability, plus any fare difference. Complimentary same-day change.

American Airlines change fee: what it costs

The American Airlines change fee has been removed on most tickets, but several situations still cost money or are not allowed. Use this table to see where your change falls.

American Airlines change costs by situation
SituationCostKey condition
Change in advance: Main Cabin and above$0 + fare differenceBefore your first flight departs

Same-day confirmed: JFK and London HeathrowFrom $150Standby not offered
Same-day standby: US, Puerto Rico, USVI$0No guaranteed seat

Fees are in US dollars and can change. Same-day fees are non-refundable unless American cannot seat you, cancels your new flight, or causes you to miss a connection. Confirm the amount in your booking before you pay.

Fare difference and American Airlines travel credit

Even with no change fee, a change can cost money. The fare difference is the gap between what you paid and today's price for the new flights. If the new flights cost more, you pay the gap. If they cost less, American does not send cash back; the remaining value is generally issued as a Trip Credit you can use on a later booking.

Example (illustrative fares): You paid $320 for a Main Cabin return from Dallas to Chicago and want to move the return by two days.

If the new return fare makes the trip $365, you pay $45 and no change fee. If the new trip is $290, you receive a $30 Trip Credit. On Basic Economy after 24 hours you could not make this change at all.

American Airlines 24-hour rule

You have 24 hours from the moment you first buy your ticket to change it or cancel it for a full refund, but only if you booked at least 7 days before departure. This applies to refundable and non-refundable fares, including Basic Economy. If your flight leaves in less than 7 days, the 24-hour refund window does not apply, so check your departure date before you rely on it. In select markets you can also hold a fare for up to 24 hours at no cost when you book 7 or more days ahead.

American Airlines Basic Economy change rules

Basic Economy is cheaper because it is restricted. After the first 24 hours it cannot be changed, and cancelling may leave you with little or no value. Trips that begin in Europe (excluding Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) are the published exception and can be changed for a fee. Some AAdvantage members may be offered a credit for cancelling, so check the options shown in Your trips before you decide. If your plans are uncertain, the fare gap to Main Cabin is often smaller than the cost of a ticket you cannot use.

Change an American Airlines flight date or time

To change an American Airlines flight on an eligible fare, you can move to a different date or time online at any point before departure, subject to seat availability. This is the simplest form of American Airlines rebooking. Travel on the changed ticket must be completed within 1 year of the original ticket date, and you can search flights up to 331 days ahead. You can also change your departure or arrival airport in the same step, and any fare difference is shown before you pay.

American Airlines same day change and standby

If you only need a different flight on the same day, an American Airlines same day change is simpler than rebooking. Your new flight must leave on the same day, between the same airports, with the same number of stops in the same cities, and must be marketed and operated by American. Requests open 24 hours before departure on aa.com or in the app.

Confirmed change or standby?

A confirmed change guarantees your seat on the new flight and costs from $60 in the US, from $60 to Canada and the Caribbean, and from $150 between New York JFK and London Heathrow. It is free for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members (plus up to 8 companions), and for Main Select, Business, First, AirPass and unrestricted Economy tickets. Standby is free for everyone on eligible US flights but guarantees nothing: you keep your original seat until a new one clears. Anyone can stand by for an earlier flight, while only AAdvantage status members can stand by for a later one. At the airport, ask at the counter or gate at least 45 minutes before departure.

Change your destination or airport

You can change your American Airlines flight to a new city too. On tickets that can be changed, Change trip lets you pick a new departure or arrival airport, so you can switch cities as well as dates. You pay any fare difference. Basic Economy tickets are not eligible after 24 hours, and same-day changes must keep the same airports. Check visa and entry rules again if you move an international trip to a new country.

American Airlines name change and corrections

An American Airlines name change to a different passenger is generally not allowed, so plan for a new booking if the passenger changes. Minor spelling errors are different: they can usually be corrected through American or the agency that issued your ticket. Fix any mismatch well before travel, because the name must match the passport or ID you will show at check-in.

Cancel an American Airlines flight for credit or refund

If you cancel an American Airlines flight on a non-refundable ticket before departure, you normally get a Trip Credit, not cash. For Trip Credit issued on or after 2 April 2024, AAdvantage members have 12 months to use it when they cancel on aa.com or in the app with their AAdvantage number in the reservation; non-members have 6 months. Adding your AAdvantage number before you cancel can therefore double your time to use the credit. Trip Credit pays for flights and online bags, not seats or upgrades, and bag or seat fees paid at the airport are not refunded when you cancel.

American Airlines no-show policy

Under the American Airlines no show policy, if you do not show up for your flight and have not changed or cancelled the ticket first, the ticket is no longer valid and is not eligible for any credit. To keep value in the ticket, cancel or change it before your first flight departs. If a delay or missed connection is the reason, contact American or your agency straight away rather than waiting.

American Airlines missed flight: what to do

Missing a flight is not the same as cancelling it, and the difference decides whether your ticket keeps any value. If you know you will be late, act before the flight departs. Once it has left, your options narrow quickly.

If your flight has not left yet

  1. Cancel or change the trip right away on aa.com or in the American app. A ticket cancelled before the first flight departs can be issued as Trip Credit, while a no-show cannot.
  2. Check whether a same-day change fits. The new flight must leave the same day between the same airports, with the same number of stops, and be operated by American. It starts at $60 in the US unless your fare or status waives it.
  3. Try standby if you are flying earlier. Standby for an earlier flight is free but not guaranteed. Only AAdvantage status members can stand by for a later flight, so most travellers cannot use standby to catch a flight after the one they miss.
  4. Ask for help early. At the airport, ask the ticket counter or gate team at least 45 minutes before departure for standby. If you booked with AirFiesta, call or message us before the flight leaves.

If your flight has already left

On a non-refundable ticket, a no-show leaves the ticket invalid and not eligible for any credit. Contact American, or the agency that issued the ticket, straight away and ask what can still be done. Options depend on your fare and the reason you missed the flight, and nothing is guaranteed.

If American caused the delay

Missing a connection because American delayed your incoming flight is treated differently from arriving late yourself. Speak to American's airport team immediately, and note that same-day change fees are refundable when American delays your incoming flight or causes you to miss your connection.

If American changes or cancels your flight

When American cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change, US Department of Transportation rules may entitle you to a refund if you decide not to travel. Credits issued for a qualifying delay or cancellation are valid for 5 years. If you accept a new flight instead, ask for it to be confirmed in writing and check your seats, because American tries to re-seat you in the same or a similar seat but cannot always do so.

Five costly mistakes to avoid

  1. Assuming Basic Economy can be moved later. After 24 hours it generally cannot.
  2. Counting on the 24-hour refund inside 7 days. The window needs at least 7 days before departure.
  3. Skipping the AAdvantage number. Without it, your Trip Credit window is shorter.
  4. Not showing up. A no-show can wipe out the whole ticket; cancel first.
  5. Expecting cash for a cheaper flight. The balance comes back as Trip Credit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my American Airlines flight for free?

Usually yes. American no longer charges a change fee on most Main Cabin and premium cabin tickets for travel from the United States, so you pay only the fare difference if the new flight costs more. Basic Economy is the exception: it can be changed free within 24 hours of booking (if you booked at least 7 days before departure) but generally cannot be changed after that.

Does American Airlines (AA) charge a change fee?

Not on most tickets bought for travel from the US in Main Cabin, Main Select, Premium Economy, Business or First. A fare difference can still apply. Same-day confirmed changes are a separate product that starts at $60 in the US, and Basic Economy trips that begin in Europe can be changed for a fee.

Can I change a Basic Economy ticket on American Airlines?

Not after the first 24 hours. American's rules say Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed after 24 hours, with one exception: trips that begin in Europe (excluding Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) can be changed for a fee. Same-day standby is free for every ticket type on eligible US flights.

What is the American Airlines 24-hour cancellation rule?

You have 24 hours from the time you first buy your ticket to change it or cancel it for a full refund, as long as you booked at least 7 days before departure. This applies to refundable and non-refundable fares, and Basic Economy too. If you booked less than 7 days out, the 24-hour refund does not apply.

How do I change my American Airlines flight online?

Find your trip on aa.com or in the American app using your 6-letter confirmation code or AAdvantage account, choose Change trip, pick a new flight, review any fare difference, and confirm. You can change your date, your departure or arrival airport, or both. Check your email for the new confirmation.

How late can I change an American Airlines flight?

Change or cancel before your first flight departs. If you cancel after departure or do not show up, the ticket loses its remaining value. Same-day changes open 24 hours before departure, and airport standby requests must be made at least 45 minutes before departure.

How far ahead can I rebook an American Airlines flight?

You can book flights up to 331 days before departure on aa.com or the American app. Travel on a changed ticket must be completed within 1 year of the original ticket date.

How much is an American Airlines same-day flight change?

A same-day confirmed change starts at $60 for travel within the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and also starts at $60 for Canada and the Caribbean. Between or through New York JFK and London Heathrow it starts at $150. It is complimentary for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members, and for Main Select, Business, First and unrestricted Economy (Y) tickets.

What is the American Airlines standby policy?

Standby lets you try for an earlier flight on your day of departure at no charge, with no guarantee of a seat. You stay confirmed on your original flight until a seat clears. Anyone can stand by for an earlier flight, but only AAdvantage status members can stand by for a later one. Standby is offered within and between the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

What if my new American Airlines flight is cheaper?

American does not refund the difference in cash. When a ticket is exchanged for a lower fare, the remaining value is generally issued as a Trip Credit that you can use on a future booking.

Can I change my American Airlines destination or airport?

Yes, on tickets that can be changed. When you use Change trip you can choose a different departure or arrival airport, a different date, or both, and you pay any fare difference. Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for a destination change after 24 hours. For same-day changes, the departure and arrival airports must stay the same.

Can I change the name on an American Airlines ticket?

American generally does not let you transfer a ticket to another traveller. Small spelling mistakes can usually be corrected by contacting American or the agency that issued the ticket, and the name must match your passport or ID. Always check before paying for a replacement ticket.

What happens if I miss my American Airlines flight?

If you do not show up and have not changed or cancelled first, your ticket is no longer valid and is not eligible for any credit. Contact American or your agency as early as possible, ideally before departure, so you can change the booking or cancel for a credit.

Can I get a refund if I miss my American Airlines flight?

Generally no. If you do not show up on a non-refundable ticket, it is no longer valid and is not eligible for any credit. A refund may be possible if American caused the problem, for example by cancelling or significantly changing your flight. Whenever you can, cancel before departure to keep the value as Trip Credit.

How long does American Airlines travel credit last?

For Trip Credit issued on or after 2 April 2024, AAdvantage members have 12 months if they cancel on aa.com or in the app with their AAdvantage number in the reservation. Non-members have 6 months. Flight Credit from an unused ticket is valid for 1 year from the ticket issue date.

What can I use American Airlines travel credit for?

Trip Credit pays for flights on American, American Eagle and AA-marketed flights, and for online bag payments. It cannot be used for extras such as seats or upgrades. If the new ticket costs more than the credit you pay the difference by credit card, and if it costs less a new credit is issued for the balance.

What if my American Airlines flight is delayed or cancelled?

Under US Department of Transportation rules you may be entitled to a refund if American cancels your flight or makes a significant change and you choose not to travel. Credits issued for a qualifying delay or cancellation are valid for 5 years.

I booked through a travel agent. Who changes my American Airlines ticket?

American says it does not charge an extra fee to change an agency or third-party booking on aa.com. After you make a change there, future changes must be made on aa.com or through American Reservations. If you booked with AirFiesta, we handle the change for you.

Can I change an American Airlines award ticket?

Award tickets follow AAdvantage rules that differ from cash fares. For same-day changes, confirmed changes on First and Business awards are complimentary, as are Main Cabin awards for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members. Other AAdvantage members can use standby.

Can I change a partner airline ticket on an American-operated flight?

Yes for same-day travel. If you bought a ticket with a partner airline for a flight operated by American, you can stand by or buy a same-day confirmed change using your American confirmation code.

Is it worth paying more than Basic Economy if my plans might change?

Often, yes. Basic Economy cannot be changed after 24 hours, while Main Cabin and above can be changed with no change fee. If there is a real chance your plans will move, compare the fare gap with the value of keeping the ability to rebook.

Can I hold an American Airlines booking before paying?

In select markets you can hold a trip for up to 24 hours at no cost if you are booking 7 days or more before departure. Trips booked with an aa.com promotion code are instant purchase only, and you cannot hold multiple trips for the same dates.

Are bag and seat fees refunded if I cancel?

Fees you paid for checked bags or seats at the airport are not refundable if you cancel your flight. Voluntary changes to paid seats are also not refundable.

How do I cancel an American Airlines flight?

Sign in on aa.com or the American app, open your trip and choose to cancel. Cancel before your first flight departs and a non-refundable ticket generally becomes a Trip Credit rather than cash. If you booked at least 7 days before departure and cancel within 24 hours of buying, you get a full refund instead.

What is the American Airlines cancellation policy?

In short: you can cancel for a full refund within 24 hours of buying if you booked at least 7 days before departure. After that, a non-refundable ticket cancelled before departure is generally issued as a Trip Credit, and a no-show ticket loses its value. Refundable fares and flights that American cancels follow different rules.

What is the American Airlines refund policy?

A cash refund goes back to the original form of payment. It is available inside the 24-hour window, on refundable fares, and when American cancels or significantly changes your flight and you choose not to travel. Outside those cases a non-refundable ticket usually returns value as Trip Credit.

How do I manage my American Airlines booking?

Open your trip on aa.com or in the American app with your 6-letter confirmation code or your AAdvantage account. From there you can change flights, cancel, review any Trip Credit and check your seats. Bookings made through AirFiesta are managed by our team.

What is an American Airlines trip credit or flight credit?

Trip Credit is what you receive when you cancel a non-refundable ticket before departure. For credit issued on or after 2 April 2024 it lasts 12 months for AAdvantage members who cancel with their number in the booking, and 6 months for non-members. Flight Credit from an unused ticket is valid for 1 year from the ticket issue date, and neither pays for seats or upgrades.

Can I change my American Airlines flight by phone?

Yes. You can speak to American Reservations using the contact details on aa.com, although doing it online is usually quicker. If you booked with AirFiesta, call or message us and we will arrange the change with American.

Can I change only my American Airlines return flight?

On a ticket that can be changed, Change trip lets you choose which flights to move, and the screen shows the repriced total and any fare difference before you confirm. Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed after the first 24 hours.

Can I change my American Airlines flight date after booking?

Yes, on eligible fares you can change your American Airlines flight date at any time before the first flight departs. You pay any fare difference, and there is no change fee on most tickets from the US.
